Accepting what is!

To accept what is is to be lucid, to wake up, to become conscious, and to consider reality as it is. It is to disengage ourselves from our mental programming, our erroneous beliefs, our blinders.

Accepting what is!

Accepting what is is seeking how to deal with a situation, how to improve it and make it positive whenever possible. It is ceasing to ask, “Why? Why me? “. On the contrary, it is trying to find out ” what for? – To do what? ”

To accept what is, is sometimes to have no choice but to mourn what was, what could have been, what should have been, to live as fully as possible the reality of The moment and try to give it meaning.

To accept what is is to choose to renounce revolt, guilt, resentment, hatred and indifference. In other words, it means living upright, in all our human dignity.

Accepting what is, is the indispensable prelude to all personal growth, all search for a solution, all inner peace.

10 questions to start the year beautifully!

With a new year comes a new energy, the opportunity to take stock of the past year and put things in perspective for the year to come, to review our goals, to remove what does not make our heart sing, to keep only what is important, to get rid of interference.

And what if in 2017 our watchword was “SIMPLIFY”, purging our lives of what we no longer want and keeping only what serves us?

Here are a few questions to help you on this path:

  1. What are the beautiful things that 2016 brought you?
  2. What do you want to CELEBRATE? What were your disappointments and difficulties, and how did they help you grow?
  3. Draw a traffic light on a white page.  – Next to the GREEN circle, write down: What do I want to do MORE? (What you have already done and want to continue pursuing in 2017?) – Next to the ORANGE circle, write: What do I want to learn to regulate? (What do I want to be vigilant about?) – Next to the RED circle, write: What do I want to stop because it does not serve me (or serves me badly)?
  4. What are the roles you play in your life? Give yourself brilliant titles for each one of these roles. Look at the different areas of your life: family, work, health, love, finances, spirituality, personal development, recreation. For each of these areas, give yourself several titles. For example, “the woman of his dreams” instead of the wife, or “genius of multi-tasking and tenderness” instead of mom, or “inspirational and inspiring messenger” instead of speaker, “brilliant CEO, stunning expert, logistics and transport genius, starred chef, cheerleader, adventurer, benevolent ambassador”… It’s up to you to play now!
  5. What are your goals for each of these roles? Write only goals that make your heart sing. Make sure they are specific and measurable and that when you read them you feel an impetus to move forward.
  6. What is THE THING that must happen in 2017? Be careful to differentiate between things that will happen no matter what and the things for which you have to free yourself of blocks but that it’s time to do this year. You are ripe, you are ready!
  7. UNDERSTANDING: In 2017, what do you want to unlearn? Identify limiting beliefs that create obstacles in your path. Unlearn these things that do not serve you and slow down, even prevent, your progress and fulfillment!
  8. RECOGNIZING: You will always have many unknowns and doubts in your life and this can disrupt you, slow you down, confuse you… but at any time you can reconnect with your truth. Among all your confusion, what do you know? What is clear? Remember your “why”. Why do you feel called to move in that direction? What makes you vibrate?
  9. DO: What are you going to do in 2017 starting next week? Once you have reconnected with your truth, then it is time to dare to act in accordance with this new reality. Do not postpone until later. Start now (even an inch a day) and you will see that you will already have made strides by the end of January
  10. What support do you need to achieve your goals? Education, resources, coaching, family, friends…? Feel free to use the full range of support options available to you!

A powerful tool, concrete and delicious!

Those of you who follow my writing and the message I bring know that two of my favorite themes are learn not to be a victim of everyday life and dare to take risks.

Today I am sharing with you a delicious, concrete and powerful tool that has the potential to transform your life – the gratitude list.

It’s easy!

What you need:

A pencil or pen and something to write on.

You will place them close to your bed or on your desk.

How?

Every night before you sleep, write down everything that was positive in your day.

Regardless of the trials, you were faced with in that day, write a list of things, people, and events that brought you well-being and made you grateful.

The point is not to write a novel!

At the beginning, especially when we are confronted with a particularly trying day, it may seem impossible.

So we delve a little deeper and we write things that we tend to consider “a given,” such as,

-I am healthy

-I have enough to eat

-I have a comfortable bed

-I have a job…

The following day may be a very good day and you’ll find plenty of other things to write, such as,

-I am healthy

-I had enough to eat

-I have a comfortable bed

-I have a job

-My colleagues and I had a very nice lunch

-My daughter scored 10 out of 10 in math

-I love my yoga class

-My sister visited me

-It was sunny all morning …

By practicing this little exercise every day, you will find that you’ll discover more and more ‘little things’ for which you are grateful that you were not necessarily conscious of…

-The cat is purring

-My neighbor smiled at me

-There was no traffic on the freeway

-I heard an interesting interview on the radio…

In short, all those little details that give flavor to our daily lives and which, once finally recognized and appreciated, help us little by little to build a whole new perspective on life. Your gratitude list will help shine a light on the ‘beautiful and the good’ around you.

It will help you to appreciate and therefore cultivate the abundance and brilliance of your life.

Today is not just another day… This day has been given to you. It’s a gift!

MORNING MUSING: HOW LOVE CAN TRANSFORM A COMPLAINT!

A message from the heart from my dear friend (and talented photographer) Susan Carey. I could not resist the urge to share this with you (and with her permission) on this blog!

This morning I walked into my (fairly) clean kitchen and saw a container on the counter left over from my daughter’s dinner last night.

I’m used to dirty lunch containers, often smelly and crusty having been neglected in a backpack for a day or two, being left out for me to clean. It’s a common occurrence in our home and common frustration for me, so my first thought was “Great, here we go again, dirty smelly dishes for me to clean, I wish my kids would clean up after themselves!”.

I noticed the complaint in my mind and I recognized immediately that it didn’t feel good to have that thought and I could choose a different reaction. The thought wasn’t heavy, nor did it solidify into the energy of a complaint I could feel in my body. It merely wafted through me, up and out, like passing gas!

Instead, as I opened the container to clean it out, I felt a softening in my heart. I saw the remnants of the dinner I had made her the night before and packed up for her to take to her job. Both chicken legs had been devoured to the bone, every single thing I’d packed for her had been fully consumed, leaving only stems, bones and a dirty napkin. The napkin was filled with gravy from the chicken and I could imagine her wiping her mouth feeling sated and fed. My eyes welled with tears as I felt the honor it was to prepare the chicken that she loves so much, with fresh herbs from our garden and love from my heart. I felt grateful to have someone in my life who I love so deeply and who loves me and who I get to nourish with acts of kindness. As I washed out the container I felt blessed for the many gifts in my life that I often step over when I’m not paying attention.

This too was a gift.

Is the Universe a friendly place?

I personally found that putting celebration on the forefront of my life as I was releasing my complaints was perfect!  I believe that, in life, if we want to get rid of one habit we have to replace it with another one that works better for us. Our conscious mind doesn’t like emptiness, and if we just try to get rid of the complaints, it will do everything in its power to fill the void. That being said,  why not replace our complaints with thank yous!

To help us get into the habit of turning on our celebration radar, I chose to create a family ritual. Every night, around the dinner table, we take some time to celebrate the good things that happened during the day. We have developed such a talent at complaining every time things or people are not meeting our expectations that we don’t even stop to acknowledge it (or them) when they do. This celebration routine is a discipline to create space for gratitude.

Kids want to celebrate recess, and the joy of having good friends to rely on, while us, the parents, want to celebrate a productive appointment or the joy of making progress in a project, the joke a colleague told us, the new contract we signed or the satisfaction of contributing with our work.

It’s a ritual we have established for a few months now, even if everyone is not forced to participate (it can seem strange to celebrate, especially at first!). Finally, I noticed that now everybody takes some pleasure in it, even my husband. Our youngest one, at 4 years old, loves this ritual and, if we happen to forget it, she certainly reminds us by saying : “Mommy, mommy, I have something to celebrate!”

To quit complaining and to start celebrating is to choose to believe that life is beautiful and is there for us ( and not against us).  Einstein said one day , that the most important question to ask ourselves was: “Is the Universe a friendly place?” Yes, life is full of problems, atrocities and wars, and often times the media turns on our radar and shows us life’s dangers and horrors. Yet, the wise of all times (Buddha, Gandhi, Mother Teresa…) share  messages of hope, peace and beauty. If I had to choose between the media and the wise, I would choose the wise because their message focuses on the good things and invite me to not go against life, but to embrace it. They invite me to not judge the past that I cannot change, but to do my best to contribute to the future. They give me hope, and I want to believe them. I think that their message vehicles peace, forgiveness and goodness.

I heard that optimists are not utopians. They are the one who will change the world because they think it’s possible and I really like this idea. We have the cultivate our perception of the world and see all it’s possibilities and goodness so that we can feel inspired to be entrepreneurs of our life.

So, with this challenge, I would like to invite you to talk, discuss and share everything you have to celebrate since you got up this morning. This challenge is not about “adding” positive thoughts in your conversations, but rather to fill the void left by eliminating your complaints by celebrating.

  • Fill the void: eliminate your complaints, now replace them with thank yous!
  • Replace conversations filled with complaints with conversations about all the things that make life beautiful, your hopes, your projects,  your possibilities, your desire to enjoy it all.
  • Take the time to tell others (family members, colleagues, friends…) what you appreciate about them.
  • Establish the celebration ritual within your household.
  • At work, start your meetings by taking 5 to 10 minutes to talk about what works, take the time to thank the participants for being there, highlight the contribution of everyone on current projects…you will all be more motivated to move forward or make some progress on projects needing all your attention.

ARE WE SCARED OF BEING “DIFFERENT” BY BEING HAPPY?

Have you ever noticed that often times we complain to relate with others and talk  about our misfortunes? We build friendships on our common misery; we come together around our “stories”. This rings even more true at work or in public places. Complaining is also something we use all day long to break the uncomfortable silence when surrounded by people we don’t know very well. Think about all the small talks about the weather – it’s always too hot, too windy or too cold! -, in the elevator, or even about how trains or planes are always late.

Because I work as a coach and do a lot of research on personal development, I have proof everyday that the way we choose to experience certain situation creates our reality. In fact, although we cannot always choose what happens to us, we can always choose how we want to deal with it. Our reaction will impact our day and ultimately our lives.

At any moment, we have the choice to live our life the way we want to, no matter what happens. Pain, failures, problems, difficulties…We can decide to consider ourselves as a powerless victim or we can’t decide that we won’t be a victim of anything or anyone We can choose to be overwhelmed or we can take our happiness in our own hands while celebrating what life gives us.

Very often, however, I notice that we are uncomfortable when it comes time to choose happiness. That’s because we are surrounded by people who prefer complaining, whining, and victimizing themselves. There is a complaint culture going on, and to choose happiness is to be “different”.

There is no shame in choosing happiness.” – Albert Camus, The Plague Vintage (May 7, 1991)

This culture pushes us to complain to relieve our frustrations. We don’t really ask any questions, we just follow the trend, doing like everyone else and complaining about everyone else. For me, this challenge truly evidenced how we tend to feel secure when we come together with others about our problems. We are so used to complaining together that we think that doing otherwise would exclude us.

Fitting in is reassuring, we know what to expect when we complain: we expect to receive compassion from the other person, or perhaps he or she will chime in and feed our suffering.

In addition, a conversation filled with complaining is very surface, it allows us to hide, it is not threatening to others as we are not inviting them to join a conversation in a deep or elevated manner. We lightly talk about negative things without taking any risks. Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to discuss something we are against rather than something we are for?

Sometimes, in our little daily chats, we complain because we feel that if we talk about what’s going our way, if we celebrate, our happiness will be stolen or others will look at us funny and be jealous. So, we decide to spend our energy on what’s hard, what’s not going very well. At the end of day, we create complaining “feasts”. We focus our attention on our problems and thus attracting more unwanted things in our life.

Try it yourself, start your day with a little complaining and you’ll quickly realize that you’ll have all the excuses in the world to complain all day long.

Say YES to Life!

YES

When we position ourself as a victim and complain about what others or things are making us go through and endure…we are  really rejecting what life has to offer. The quote that follows illustrates and  expands on this idea from Frédéric Lenoir, French author of “Petit traité de vie intérieure” “Little  Inner Life  Treaty “( Plon edition).

“By merely acquiescing to Life, it provides a feeling of gratitude which in itself is a great source of happiness, and allows us to fully embrace the positive and to transform the negative as much as possible. Saying ” yes” is an inner attitude that opens us to life’s motion,  its unpredictability , its unexpected and  surprises.”
